Sure this is a history blog, so one might not think there is a need for updates. That’s not the case in our changing city. Here are some updates to posts about some of the retro locations around Orlando. The Minute Maid Headquarters Building (Original Post) – The days are numbered for this building, because it is soon to be demolished. Signs have gone up announcing it will be the site of a new Wawa.

Church Street Station Depot (Original Post) One of Orlando’s icon historic structures has been empty for several years. It’s soon to be the site of Ferg’s Sports Bar & Grill. (Story: Bungalower) Along with the sports bar, an upscale restaurant is in the plans. And some interesting options for storage. Construction continues along the rails for the Sun Rail debuting next year. (Story: Orlando Business Journal)

Cherry Plaza Hotel (Lake Eola) (Original Post) Construction continues on the World of Beer which will open in the bottom level of the former Cherry Plaza Hotel. Soon we can enjoy a big selection of beers and a lake view on the grounds President Johnson and Walt Disney walked 50 years ago. (Story: Bungalower)

Back to early memories of the Eola Plaza. My grandmother was one of Eola Plaza’s original tenants. For many years she lived at the corner of Summerlin and Colonial Drive. After she sold her home, it was a big story when her brick house was moved to S. Bumby Street (her home is still standing on S. Bumby). I was told that parts of Colonial Dr. (especially at intersections) had to be closed because of the long bed truck carrying the house needed special clearances to get to Bumby. Porter Paints bought the lot where my grandmother’s house stood and it remained there for well over 40 years. The last time I looked, maybe 10 years ago the Porter Paints store was demolished and it was once again and empty lot.
I loved going to the Eola Plaza to have lunch with my grandmother. It was a rather grand thing to do on a Saturday afternoon when you were 11-13 years old! I felt like I was in Manhattan! One of my cousins had her wedding reception dinner in the Fountain Terrace Room. It was beautiful affair for any time or any place. The view, looking out on the lake with the newish Centennial Fountain was something to behold. When I graduated from Robert E. Lee Junior High my parents made the decision to move to Daytona Beach. We moved in the summer of 1960, but I left my heart in Orlando.
